Social Justice Book Talk
During class, we learned about the importance of using social justice books in our classrooms. This allows students to learn more about the current social issues of today in an age-appropriate way. We also learned how having students create their own book talks increases their motivation to read. Book talks would motivate students from low-income backgrounds to share about the books they read. Students also are motivated to read other books that their peers have done book talks on. (Barber, 2017) Book talks allow for creative expression which is another motivating factor for students.
Digital Learner Poll
For one of our assignments, we asked students in K-12th grades about their digital learning. Through this assignment, we were able to learn what students actually use in their classrooms to learn digitally, their preferences, and their thoughts on digital learning. Teachers could create polls like this one at the beginning of the school year and throughout the year to determine how technology use in lessons is affecting students. Teachers could use a poll like this to support their students from low-income backgrounds by learning about their access to digital tools at home and how learning digitally affects them.
